Agenda

Timetable
8:45 - 9:15 Registration & Coffee/Tea
9:15 - 9:30 Welcome & Introduction
Andy Bolton, Chief Executive Officer, Capacitas
10:00 - 10:15 Why is Virtualisation making an impact in the Distributed OS world?
Andy Bolton, Chief Executive Officer, Capacitas

ABSTRACT: As distributed operating system platforms have approached the processing speed of mainframes their use of a single operating system per server has become wasteful, requiring datacentres packed with a large number of discrete servers often operating at low utilisations. The introduction of virtualisation products on distributed platforms (either 3rd party or by the OS vendor themselves) is dramatically and rapidly altering the business model for developing, implementing and managing applications, as well as impacting other important incidental aspects of IS management such as datacentre usage and licensing models. This presentation gives an overview of the impact that distributed OS virtualisation is having on the market and the likely changes this will require to application performance and capacity management processes.

10:15 - 11:00 Virtualisation technologies on Windows Server 2003 and Solaris 10
Paul Seaton-Smith, Principal Consultant, Capacitas

ABSTRACT:The two major virtualisation products on the Windows Server platform are Microsoft Virtual Server and the VMWare Infrastructure Suite (including VMWare ESX Server). Virtualisation on Solaris 10 is possible using Solaris 10 containers (zones).

The major differences between these solutions will be discussed and compared, with specific reference to the goal of server consolidation and workload management.

11:00 - 11:10 Coffee/Tea Break
11:10 - 12:00 Virtualisation challenges and solutions for capacity management
Paul Seaton-Smith, Principal Consultant, Capacitas

ABSTRACT: The use of virtualisation technologies for server consolidation will lead to a number of capacity management challenges:

  • Monitoring host operating systems
  • Monitoring guest operating systems
  • Measuring resource utilisation during dynamic re-allocation of resources
  • Comparing the performance of applications running in virtualised and native environments
  • Finally the advantages and disadvantages of virtualisation as a server consolidation strategy will be discussed, with specific reference to different workload types.

    12:00 - 12:30 Question & Answer Session
Chair (London): Danny Quilton, Chief Operating Officer, Capacitas
Chair (Edinburgh): Neil McMenemy, Principal Consultant, Capacitas
    Panel: Andy Bolton, Paul Seaton-Smith
    12:30 - 13:30 Buffet lunch and networking

    Seminar Brief

Virtualisation products, such as Microsoft Virtual Server or VMWare Server, are increasingly becoming the standard in many data centres and test beds. These allow multiple guest operating systems to run under a single host operating system on a server, thereby appearing as separate discrete servers.

Virtualisation has only been used relatively recently on distributed Operating Systems (OS) such as Unix variants and Microsoft Windows Server. On Unix platforms virtualisation has become popular due to vendor-led initiatives such as containers in Solaris. However Microsoft Windows Server has only more recently been taken seriously with the introduction of VMWare, so much so that Microsoft have had to play catch-up by launching their own product Virtual Server with inferior functionality.

Whilst the mainframe platform has addressed these issues for many decades, for less-mature platforms, such as Windows Server, the increasing use of virtualisation brings its own problems with monitoring, measuring, analysing and controlling workloads on the platform. This seminar is designed to review some of these issues faced by companies investigating virtualisation and provide some suggestions as to risk mitigation and effective capacity management in a virtualised environment.
