09:30 - 10:15 ITIL Capacity Management: What improvements are needed?
Andy Bolton, Chief Executive Officer, Capacitas

ABSTRACT: Whilst ITIL currently covers many of the basics of a capacity management process it does miss some vital areas, such as workload characterisation and performance engineering. This presentation describes the strengths and weaknesses of ITIL Capacity Management and, importantly, where it needs further work. Examples are given of key components of a successful Capacity Management process that are missing from ITIL 2.

10:15 - 11:00 Using ITIL to build a successful Capacity Management process
Neil McMenemy, Principal Consultant, Capacitas

ABSTRACT: It may be agreed that the ITIL Capacity Management Process has some weaknesses but its major strength is in the framework that it provides, particularly in the way that Capacity Management should interface with other ITIL processes. In this slot we will look at how ITIL can be used to provide the framework for a sound Capacity Planning Process and how the ITIL self-assessment can be improved upon to enable that work to begin.

11:00 - 11:10 Coffee/Tea Break
11:10 - 11:45 BS 15000 & ISO/IEC 20000
Andy Bolton, Chief Executive Officer, Capacitas

ABSTRACT: International standards are important to ICT-reliant companies because until recently IT staff have relied on their instincts and experience to develop successful processes; unfortunately this has often left key areas ignored. The move towards best practice and international standards demonstrates the increasing maturity and discipline within the IT industry. This session describes the British Standards Institute and derived ISO standards for Service Management and how to utilise their value.

11:45 - 12:15 ITIL 3: The Refresh
Andy Bolton, Chief Executive Officer, Capacitas

ABSTRACT: The Office of Government Commerce (OGC) are currently conducting a refresh of ITIL. This will only be the second update since its release in the late 1980s. This section reviews the refresh process and the new ITIL structure, identifies how this new structure can best represent effective Capacity Management and then examines the delivery methodology to determine if it will improve on ITIL 2.

12:15 - 12:45 Question & Answer Session

Panel (London): Andy Bolton, Neil McMenemy; Leon Levy, Managing Director, Capacity & Performance Solutions.

Panel (Edinburgh): Andy Bolton, Neil McMenemy.

12:45 - 13:30 Buffet Lunch/Networking

Seminar Brief

The IT Infrastructure Library has become a popular aspiration for IT Service Management around the world, but currently covers the comprehensive topic of Capacity Management in a mere 44 pages of its Service Delivery book. Whilst ITIL does a good job at explaining the main deliverables of a capacity management process, in the context of an integrated service management framework, it does lack some key details of 'best-practice' capacity management. ITIL also does not accurately reflect the importance of Capacity Management to the entire Service Delivery set of processes.

This seminar stresses the true importance of capacity management and its relationship as the foundation of Service Delivery. While it is hoped that these deficiencies will be resolved in the current 'ITIL Refresh' the Refresh development methodology may prevent this.
