Andy Bolton, Chief Executive, Capacitas

ABSTRACT: ICT-reliant companies have invested considerable time, effort and capital expenditure in building and managing data centres. These data centres have grown in importance due to the need to house large numbers of distributed systems. However in recent years this growth has led to major problems, as the data centre manager has had to procure ever larger sites, with other challenges being power and air-conditioning. This presentation looks at the business reasons behind data centre capacity planning, the drivers affecting the modern data centre and a look at how data centres are evolving with new technology requirements.

Seminar Brief

Data Centres are facing many challenges as demand for server space increases; costs challenges alone include floor space in a market of growing property prices and demand for power when power prices face an uncertain future due to geopolitical issues. The move towards Blade servers and virtualisation may only exacerbate the pressures on power supply and heat dissipation. This seminar looks at these issues and how appropriate capacity modelling and planning can assist Data Centre design and IT strategy.
