Technical Architecture

In defining a technical architecture, there are a number of capacity and performance issues that the architect needs to consider:
  • What are the business drivers of the architecture?
  • How can the business drivers be measured?
  • What are the capacity and performance requirements of the architecture?
  • What are the capacity/performance trade-offs between different architecture choices?
  • How is performance monitoring and reporting incorporated into the architecture?
  • How scalable is the architecture?
Capacitas has developed the Technology Architecture Service to help organisations address these questions prior to developing their technical architecture. Capacitas will carry out the following activities, where appropriate:
  • Define the capacity and performance management requirements of the architecture
  • Define business volume requirements of the architecture
  • Conduct a capacity impact assessment on the existing architecture
  • Conduct a scalability study of the architecture to ensure business volumes can be accommodated
  • Define capacity/performance monitoring, reporting, tracking and alerting requirements and recommend appropriate solutions
  • Performance and stress test the architecture, where appropriate

Key Benefits

  • Technical architecture decisions can be made whilst understanding the capacity management benefits of each option
  • Reduce the time spent reworking architecture design to accommodate changing business volume requirements
  • Operational cost of technical architecture is minimised by providing accessible capacity/performance monitoring, reporting, tracking and alerting
  • Minimise the risk of service level penalties by ensuring new architecture does not impact the performance of existing applications
