Data Centre Capacity Planning

Monday 16th April, 2007

The Hatton, Hatton Garden, London

Data Centre Managers are facing many challenges as demand for server space increases; costs challenges alone include floor space in a market of growing property prices and demand for power when power prices face an uncertain future due to geopolitical issues. The move towards Blade servers and virtualisation may only exacerbate the pressures on power supply and heat dissipation. This seminar looks at these issues and how appropriate capacity modelling and planning can assist Data Centre design and IT strategy.

This seminar is designed to:

  • Identify the key challenges to conducting data centre capacity planning
  • Detail the reasons why data centre capacity planning is key to service availability
  • Demonstrate the business and financial benefits of data centre capacity planning
  • Show how the advent of new technologies requires best-practice capacity planning in the data centre
  • Present an approach to conducting data centre capacity planning
  • Show how established capacity planning techniques can be applied to solve planning problems in data centre environments
  • Outline a strategy for establishing data centre capacity planning

Programme of half-day Seminars

The Performance or Capacity Analyst faces many challenges such as changing business processes, new technology and standards. The Capacitas 2007 seminar programme is designed to provide the Performance and Capacity Analyst with an understanding of important current capacity and performance issues they face. The seminars will be run in central London close to our offices.

Sizing the UK Identity Card System

Capacitas, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) capacity and performance specialist has issued a white paper which, for the first time, quantifies the expected business demand for the UK Identity Card service. The expected demand is 1.2 billion business processes per annum, which is comparable to the NHS National Programme for IT (currently the largest non-military ICT project in Europe). The scale of this demand presents a significant risk to the project as system performance issues are more likely to occur when attempting to meet demand of this magnitude. Recently Training Feedback

"I found the Capacitas course (Capacity Planning: Tools & Methods) to be well-structured, comprehensive and informative. We covered a lot of complex material and a broad spectrum of case studies in the 4 days. The presentations were clear and were delivered by very well-informed trainers in a relaxed and effective manner. The case studies showed how easily the techniques can be applied to good effect in a variety of realistic scenarios.

The sample spreadsheets and Excel add-ons have proven to be very useful, both as supplements to the comprehensive notes [and] providing working templates for doing our own analysis and modelling. I've been entering our own business volumes into the forecasting spreadsheets and have already found this useful in dealing with capacity queries. I would recommend this course to anyone with an interest in capacity planning." Read more...
