ITIL Capacity Management: Past, Present & Future

Monday 22nd January, 2007

The Hatton, Hatton Garden, London

Monday 29th January, 2007

Regus House, Edinburgh Park, Edinburgh

The IT Infrastructure Library has become a popular aspiration for IT Service Management around the world, but currently covers the comprehensive topic of Capacity Management in a mere 44 pages of its Service Delivery book. Whilst ITIL does a good job at explaining the main deliverables of a capacity management process, in the context of an integrated service management framework, it does lack some key details of 'best-practice' capacity management. ITIL also does not currently reflect the importance of Capacity Management to the entire Service Delivery set of processes accurately.

This seminar stresses the true importance of capacity management and its relationship as the foundation of Service Delivery. While it is hoped that these deficiencies will be resolved in the current 'ITIL Refresh' the Refresh development methodology may prevent this.

This seminar:

  • examines ITIL's current performance and capacity management coverage
  • describes what Capacitas believes is missing from ITIL
  • describes when and why Capacitas believes ITIL should be adopted
  • describes how to use ITIL as a foundation on which to build an effective process
  • describes the relevant aspects of BS15000 & ISO/IEC20000
  • describes the ITIL refresh methodology and why Capacitas believes this is a barrier to improvement

Virtualisation and its impact on Capacity & Performance Management

Monday 12th February, 2007

The Hatton, Hatton Garden, London

Monday 19th February, 2007

Regus House, Edinburgh Park, Edinburgh

Virtualisation products allow multiple guest operating systems to run under a single host operating system on a server, thereby appearing as separate discrete servers. Although virtualisation has been around on the mainframe platform for decades, it has only been available relatively recently on mid-range platforms. Examples include Solaris Containers, Microsoft Virtual Server and VMWare ESX Server.

The increasing use of virtualisation brings new problems with monitoring, measuring, analysing and managing workloads in the virtual environment. This seminar will review some of these issues and provide some suggestions on how to conduct effective performance and capacity management in a virtualised environment.

Most modern enterprises are migrating to Storage Area Network (SAN) architectures for a variety of reason, including cost, security and business continuity. However, the migration to SAN is not an easy path. SANs bring a wealth of performance and capacity implications, depending on the architecture and technology chosen. The Capacity Planning and Performance Management of Storage Area Networks (SANs) course is designed to give the Storage Capacity Analyst an understanding of how to cope with the issues surrounding SANs.

Capacity and Performance Management of IP Networks Using IP Flow Measurement

Capacity and performance management of IP networks has traditionally been a difficult task given the large number of ICT services that typically share network resources. The continued convergence of services onto a single IP network will exacerbate things further. This paper discusses the how IP flow measurement works and the benefits of employing it for network capacity and performance management. The paper details the challenges associated with deploying IP flow measurement and provides a discussion of the current IP flow measurement market offerings. More details...

Cross-Charging Mechanisms, demonstrated with real-life Case Studies

Neil McMenemy, Principal Consultant at Capacitas, recently presented on Cross Charging Mechanisms at the itSMF seminar Financial Management - The Chamber of Secrets at the Natural History Museum in London.

IT Chargeback or recharge, is not a new concept, ITIL has described Financial Management from its inception. Typically, organisations are told that their charging mechanisms have to be fair, consistent, auditable and easily understood. This presentation looks at some real-life situations and how the existing and enhanced charging mechanisms of the organisations being described have shaped customer behaviour and influenced the organisations decisions, both positively and with unfortunate circumstances. The emphasis of the presentation is placed on how IT hardware resource costs are measured and apportioned and how subtle changes can make significant differences to how the business operates. Recently Training Feedback

"I found the Capacitas course (Capacity Planning: Tools & Methods) to be well-structured, comprehensive and informative. We covered a lot of complex material and a broad spectrum of case studies in the 4 days. The presentations were clear and were delivered by very well-informed trainers in a relaxed and effective manner. The case studies showed how easily the techniques can be applied to good effect in a variety of realistic scenarios.

The sample spreadsheets and Excel add-ons have proven to be very useful, both as supplements to the comprehensive notes [and] providing working templates for doing our own analysis and modelling. I've been entering our own business volumes into the forecasting spreadsheets and have already found this useful in dealing with capacity queries. I would recommend this course to anyone with an interest in capacity planning." Read more...
