How to manage and improve web-based application performance

The rise of web services, particularly as revenue-collection systems means that web service performance is becoming increasingly important. It is often difficult to ensure that web services meet SLAs for a number of reasons:

  • Service demand may be difficult to predict
  • Service demand may be extremely bursty, i.e. large numbers of requests may arrive in a short space of time
  • The web service is underpinned by a complex infrastructure, consisting of multiple technology layers

The author has developed a set of tips web performance to help the capacity planner ensure web services meet their performance requirements. More details...

Why and when to use Simulation Modelling

Capacity planners and performance engineers need to build models to predict the expected response times of applications over IT infrastructures. However, there are several different modelling techniques that can be used, including discrete-event simulation modelling. However simulation modelling is often seen as overly-complex, difficult, requiring expensive tools and lengthy. While it doesn't fit all situations simulation modelling is still recognised as the most accurate method of predicting performance and scalability. This article describes when simulation modelling is the appropriate solution and why it is in these situations. More details...
