Forthcoming Workshops

Using Microsoft Excel for Effective Capacity & Performance Management

A one-day workshop, 13th June, 09:00-17:00
The Hatton, Hatton Garden, London, EC1N 8HN

Capacity and performance practitioners traditionally used SAS to undertake analysis and reporting. However, Microsoft Excel is widely available but its capabilities are surprisingly underused, especially its ability to analyse and report on capacity and performance data. This seminar gives practical advice on how to undertake a multitude of tasks using Excel. The workshop is platform independent, using various sources of data in demonstrations, and focuses on providing a value-for-money approach to capacity and performance analytical tools. Topics covered include:

  1. Pivot tables: manipulating data quickly and effectively; dealing with gaps in data; summarising; creating interval records from event records
  2. Filtering: custom filters
  3. Batch modelling: look-up tables; Gantt charts
  4. Surface plots: combining 24 hour profiles with monthly growth
  5. Forecasting functions: FORECAST; GROWTH; linear regression with trend-lines, SLOPE and INTERCEPT functions and the Data Analysis wizard
  6. Creating GIFs: saving charts separately from the workbook; creating HTML
  7. Automation: creating Visual Basic modules through keyboard macros
  8. Charts: dealing with ‘too much’ data; general tips

Automated Detection of Workload Profile Changes

Capacity planners typically want to understand the demand profile on a system over a period of time. For example, the daily demand profile of an online booking system would differ from that of an ATM. This analysis is called workload profiling. This article outlines a simple approach to automatically determine if a workload profile has changed over a period of time. The examples given in this article deal with daily workload profiles. The approach can be extended to include weekly and monthly profiles. More details...
